As mentioned earlier, we still have two vacant officer positions and we extend an
invite for anyone interested in taking an active role in our section to volunteer
their time. The officer positions do not require previous experience, but do require
a monthly time commitment on your part to attend the council meetings and fulfill
any tasks associated with your position. Council meetings are generally an hour in
length and take place during the last Tuesday of each month. Listed below are the two
positions still available:
Position Descriptions
Honors and Awards
The Honors & Awards Chairperson shall be a voting member of the Council and
shall be responsible for promoting and recognizing excellence within the
Section through local, regional and national recognition.
"The level of your activity will vary. To do an effective job, you
should establish a subcommittee...work closely with the Communications Officer or Newsletter Editor."
- AIAA Officer Manual
Public Policy
The Public Policy Chairperson shall be a voting member of the Council and shall
be responsible for Section public policy activities, speakers bureaus,
interface with public officials, and contact the Institute National Public
Policy Officer.
"Public Policy, simply defined, is policy set by the government in the
name of the public. To AIAA, Public Policy means the Institute's relations with the government, and mainly with the federal
government...if AIAA can influence government decision making by providing information and expertise on aerospace
programs, we can in turn influence the advancement of our profession." - AIAA Officer Manual
If you would like more details on these two positions or are interested in contributing to
our section in a less formal manner, please contact our chair, Mr. King Molder, at
chairman@aiaa-nwfl.org
or our secretary, Ms. Kelly Stewart, at secretary@aiaa-nwfl.org.

Fond Farewell
Recognizing those who have contributed greatly...
Kelly Stewart
Secretary
I would like to take this opportunity to pay recognition to Mr. Gerry Harbaugh. He has served as Treasurer
for our section for as many as years as I can remember. Gerry was a very active member on our council, doing
far more than the formal duties required of his position. Many of our section's dinner meetings and golf
tournaments were made possible by Gerry's diligence and attention to detail. Even more impressive, Gerry was
the driving force behind Eglin's designation as a Historical Aviation Site. The amount of work required to
piece together the proposal package, network with the appropriate individuals, and orchestrate the
HAS ceremony was quite impressive. Gerry was able to pull off the feat smoothly and was gracious enough to
acknowledge the members of his team that helped when needed. We will dearly miss Gerry's presence on our
council, but wish him the best in his new adventure: retirement!

Educational Outreach Activities
Continuing the promotion of math and science
John Fay
Former Educational / Pre-College Outreach Chair
The section continued to hold to its tradition of supporting the regional
science fair that takes place in February at the Ft. Walton Beach Fairgrounds.
Volunteers are asked to judge student projects pertaining to the aerospace
sciences, from air vehicle design to the harnessing of wind energy. Six AIAA
members participated in this event: James Rogers, Jimmy Leahy, John Fay, Larry
Ukeiley, Phil Webb, and T.J. Worden.
The science fair projects are separated into two divisions: junior and senior.
For each division, a first place prize ($100) and second place prize ($50) is
awarded. Presented below are the winners along with their school and project
title.

In addition to supporting the regional science fair, the section is providing a
neat hands-on activity to local schools. The activity involves using a
telescope equipped with a solar filter to measure the diameter of the sun.
Students are asked to measure the amount of time it takes for the sun to travel
past a fixed point in the sky. Through geometry and physics, students can
approximate the sun's diameter based on the radius of the earth's orbit and the
speed at which the earth rotates. The exercise was first completed at Edwins
Elementary School on May 2nd as part of the Talented and Gifted
Program. It was also carried out at Pensacola High School on May 9th
with four different classes.
